Chapter two: Michael met Gertrud at the ski lodge. They got married when Gertrud got pregnant, but got divorced when their daughter Julia was five. Michael felt an enormous amount of guilt about the divorce, especially because his young daughter has a difficult time accepting it. After divorcing, Michael took a few other temporary sexual partners like Helen, Gesina and Hilke. But he didn`t emotionally connect with them.
Chapter three: The professor who had given the concentration camps seminar died. Michael attends the funeral. At the graveside, he met an old school acquaintance, and the two men discussed the seminar from years before. The school acquaintance asked Michael why he had been so attentive and interested in Hanna. Michael didn`t answer and, instead, saw a streetcar approaching and said a hurried goodbye and ran off to catch the streetcar, escaping the question.
Chapter four: Michael had to decide on a profession within the law. He didn`t see himself in any of the roles he had seen lawyers play at Hanna`s trial. Last, a professor of legal history had offered him a research job. Michael spent time studying the laws of the Third Reich and ponders the nature of the law. He also began to read books he had previously read and found solace in the repetition.
Chapter five: Michael read Odyssey after Gertrud and he had separated. He began to read aloud to himself, because it helped him to relax. He slowly realized he is, in fact, reading aloud to Hanna even though she was not present. He bought a tape recorder and began to record the books. He began to write his own material, which he also recorded and sent to Hanna. However, he never sent any personal notes or communication beyond the text read onto the tapes.
