summary Chapter 8 is about the book written by the daughter. Michael worked through the book with particular thoroughness, but still felt alien to it. Years later he reread the book and found that it is the book that creates distance. However, even in her numbness the daughter did not lose the ability to observed and analyze. Michael also tried to recognize Hanna as one of the guards described in the book but failed. Michael then presents a summary of the book with a large amount of detail provided about the night of the fire when hundreds of prisoners died in the church.
Chapter 9 returns to the trial. The judge asks each defendant, individually, why they did not unlock the door. All of the defendants state they were physically injured, or they were performing assigned tasks, or they were in shock. However, the report found in SS archives suggested that those defendants were the female guards who kept the door locked and allowed the fire to rage in the church. The other defendants then claim that Hanna wrote the SS report as a cover-up for her own inadequacies, and that the report is not factual.
When the judge asks Hanna why she did not free the prisoners, Hanna said that they did not have any alternative. They did not know what to do. They have the responsibility to guard the women and not let them go. Then the judge asks Hanna did she write the report. Hanna said she did not, but other defendant said that it was Hanna who wrote the report. Hanna finally admitted that she had written the report because she didn’t want to give out her handwriting.
