  1. Chapter 13
In June, the court flew to Israel for two weeks. During those days, Michael tried to study hard but in vain. He spent a large amount of time imagining the different appearances of Hanna. Sometimes Hanna is a cruel devil, regarding the frail children as nothing but just an instrument for reading. Sometimes Hanna is a normal woman, pulling on her stocking and dancing in front of the mirror. In the ending of this chapter, Michael, as narrator, briefly relates the history of Holocaust literature and notes having read much of it.

    Chapter 14
Michael decides to visit the Struthof-Natzweiler concentration camp, which is the nearest concentration camp to his town. He hikes and hitchhikes toward the camp. He gets a ride from an old man. They talked about the trail. The man says they didn't hate the Jews - in fact they were completely indifferent to the Jews - it was just their job. They wanted to finish their job so they could go home. Michael asks the man if he had shot Jews and the man becomes enraged and made Michael to leave the car.

    Chapter 15
Michael visits the Struthof-Natzweiler concentration camp and examines the layout and construction of the camp. While walking in the camp he remembers how Hanna always called him 'kid,' and he connects his experiences to the other children that read to Hanna. Over the next days, he continues to try to understand Hanna's life. With a complicated mind, he returns home and spends some days thinking his own life.
