Not knowing how to response, Hanna asked’’ What would you have done?’’ in reverse. That amazed others, though the judge’s answer had nothing to do. CHAPTER SEVEN Not only did Hanna’s insistent contradictions irritate the judge, but her willingness to admit things also annoyed other defendants. Thus, they started to use Hanna’s concessions to incriminate her and exonerate themselves. And the daughter recalled that Hanna used to select some weak and delicate girls to read aloud to her every evening. Those girls could not work anymore and would be sent to Auschwitz soon. And that indirect acknowledges something. Hanna did not say anything more, but turned around and looked at Michael, tense and exhausted.
